Matt Viney was first elected to Parliament in the 1999 supplementary election of Frankston East.
In his first term, Matt helped secure a $21 million redevelopment of Frankston Hospital, increased police numbers at Frankston by 62 per cent, significant new investments into local schools and roads (including the start of the long overdue duplication of the Frankston-Cranbourne Rd) and a $60 million community park development in Frankston North.
He served as Parliamentary Secretary for Health between 1999 and 2002, where he assisted then Health Minister John Thwaites in undoing the damage done to the Victorian health system by the previous government. He helped restructure hospital networks and implement Labor’s ambulance policy.
Matt was re-elected in 2002 to the seat of Chelsea Province and was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Innovation and Industry where he worked to develop and implement policies in innovation, medical research and biotechnology in Victoria. He has assisted in the progress of the Australian Synchrotron project and developed a long-term strategic plan for Melbourne’s Parkville health and medical research precinct.
Prior to being elected to Parliament, Matt had a career in local government management and for ten years was Managing Director of a consultancy and market research company.
He has a Bachelor of Social Science (La Trobe University, 1978) and Graduate Diplomas in Urban Sociology (Swinburne Institute of Technology, 1979) and Business Administration (Swinburne Institute of Technology 1990).
Matt lives in West Gippsland. He has four children, is a supporter of the Collingwood Football Club and enjoys reading and films.
