Martin lives in Elwood with his partner Sharon and their twins, Emma and Tom. They share the house they are busy renovating with the family dogs – Fred and Ginger. He has lived in the area for the majority of the past 20 years and has a family connection stretching back to 1937.
Martin was educated at Catholic and State schools before graduating from Monash University with an Honours degree in History and Politics, and then completing a Masters of Commerce at Melbourne University.
Before being elected, Martin was the Chief of Staff to the Minister for Police and Emergency Services. He has also worked as a senior official of the Australian Services Union, a community worker in Public Housing; and in fields as diverse as telephone betting, jackerooing and finance.
Martin has a long history of participation in community life. He was a founder of St Kilda Heritage Watch – an organisation set up to protect the unique built and social form of St Kilda. He is also a member of the Elwood Primary School Council and a longstanding member of the Australian Conservation Foundation. Martin has always been interested in public policy, particularly in the areas of health, human rights and the economy.
He is also on the board of the Centre for Policy Development, along with Julian Burnside QC. Martin’s record of community involvement and engagement with policy-making leave him well-placed to be a strong voice in Government for Albert Park.
